“People of Fashion Dress Ostentatiously”: Unpacking Luxury in Eighteenth-Century Spanish America
I had the honor to present at ICOM Costume Committee’s Annual Conference in August 2021, which was held virtually due to pandemic restrictions. I spoke about luxury in the Viceroyalty of New Granada and made a case for the importance of understanding luxury in its specific, local expressions. In late-eighteenth-century New Granada, luxury in fashion was constituted by both European and Indigenous Andean world-views.
